If you’ve never visited the Dutch capital you may not realise that Amsterdam is a sweet lover’s paradise. There are dessert shops selling cakes, cookies, waffles and ice cream EVERYWHERE! I, of course, sampled a few because you simply cannot visit Amsterdam without indulging your sweet tooth a little.
Here are my top 3 recommendations for delicious desserts in Amsterdam.
Cookies: Van Stapele Koekmakerij
Van Stapele Koekmakerij is a famous cookie maker. So famous in fact that people queue up outside to purchase themselves this sweet treat. There are even staff employed to keep the queue organised!
Did we queue? Yes we did. But only because we had a bit of time to kill before a booking elsewhere. I admit I did feel a bit silly queueing that long for cookies (I can’t remember how long for exactly but likely on par with queuing for burgers in Queenstown, New Zealand).
The cookies are a dark chocolate dough with a white chocolate filling and are served straight from the oven. And yes they are delicious.
The good news is that the cookie shop have moved premises so according to their website, queue times are much much shorter.
Pancakes: Original Pancake
We needed a late night sugar fix so found Original Pancake to satisfy our cravings. We opted for large topped pancakes as opposed to the small Dutch Poffertjes. Nick chose apple and cinnamon, while I went for the Kinder Bueno topped pancake. Both were delicious but I was defeated by mine, a bit too sickly in the end but I don’t regret a thing.
The pancakes are an original recipe but the toppings are creative – you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Stroopwafel: Melly’s Stroopwafel
You cannot leave Amsterdam without trying this well known Dutch treat. Stroopwafels are two thin round cookies held together with a syrup filling. The best way to try a stroopwafel is to lay it on top of a mug of tea or coffee and let the hot steam soften the waffle.
There are stroopwafels available all over Amsterdam and the most common one which you may have even tried at home is the original. However when seeking some delicious desserts in Amsterdam you are sure to find stroopwafels with assorted toppings. I recommend the salted caramel stroopwafel from Melly’s Stroopwafel.
